How to Choose an Industrial Serial Device Server
Evaluate serial interfaces, network modes, environmental requirements and deployment constraints before selecting a device server.
Start with the installed serial interface
Confirm whether the field device uses RS232, RS422 or RS485 and record its connector, wiring method, baud rate, data bits and parity settings. A device server must support the physical interface and serial configuration already used by the equipment.
Match the network operating mode
Review how the host software opens and maintains connections. TCP Server, TCP Client, UDP Server and UDP Client modes solve different connection and data-flow requirements.
- Use TCP where delivery confirmation and stable sessions are important.
- Use UDP where low overhead is preferred and the application can handle packet loss.
- Check DHCP, DNS and configuration access requirements before deployment.
Check the industrial installation requirements
Power input, operating temperature, mounting method, enclosure format and available cabinet space should be evaluated with the same care as communication specifications. Document these requirements before comparing models.
